Current Directions in Computer Music Research
Published in Paperback by MIT Press (November, 1991)
Average review score:

A must have for computer music enthusiastsThe articles in collection are very readable - a great deal of care seems to have been made in the editing process. Various authors give summaries of different parts of the area of computer music. Some of the articles I particularly like include the following: i) several articles by different authors on synthesis of the singing voice; ii) the article by Mathews and Pierce on the Bohlen-Pierce scale, a non-octave-based scale of odd harmonics, with 3:5:7 and 5:7:9 chords; iii) Risset's article on paradoxical sounds; iv) Schottstaedt's article on automatic counterpoint. The subject is moving very rapidly, so some of the information is outdated, but most is not.

The Door to Ambermere
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (June, 1992)
Average review score:

I HIGHLY recommend this book and series for fantasy readers! This is the 1st book of a currently 3 book series, but there is NO REASON why the series should end there -- and I greatly hope it gets continued. The next is Sorceress of Ambermere. My detailed rating would be 4.6 for this book. This book seems to really be more of an intro to the characters and universe of Ambermere. I personally started on the second book, and I may recommend that to future readers. I'm having a hard time describing what makes the series great. I could say, it just is! But partially, there is an incredible amount of imagination here. I've never read anything like it. The combination/contrast of magic use with the everyday typical city life of New York is hilarious! And the characters in these books are wonderful. Rogan the Obscure is a huge laugh. And Alexander is great! Also, there is something uniquely satisfying when you watch good people gain power(s). This book equally mixes Marcia's story with Daniel's. Marcia is the protagonist in the future books. Daniel becomes a bit character later, but his adventures here are entertaining and could serve to get you into the series. This series deserves to be widely read!

The Dreamer (An Avon Flare Book)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Flare (February, 1996)
Average review score:

The Dreamer is a GREAT EXCITING BOOK!!!I think that the author did a great job in writing this book. It has very exciting and breath taking events that occur through each page. I think that this is definetly a book I could read endless times without putting it down. If you like books that have adventure, romance, excitment, and horror all combined into one book, then this would be a great choice for you. I think that the author made this book to tell you that some dreams can come true...even though Ashley didn't have very good dreams. I thought this book was also written very discriptivly and kept my interest to the very end. I'd also really recommend that you read it. You'll love it!!! To all the dreamers out there....READ THIS BOOK!

A rare gem!A great fantasy adventure with a wonderful Christian message...a rare treat! Engaging characters, a fast-paced plot and plenty of action make this an enjoyable read, and the handful of illustrations are icing to a very tasty cake! This is one the whole family will enjoy.

Environmental Ethics and Policy Book: Philosophy, Ecology, Economics
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (15 September, 1997)
Average review score:

It's not just "environmental" ethics...This book provides an extraordinary place for any individual looking to understand and hone their ethics and values, it just happens to use environmental issues as its context. The editorial comments are concise and probing, and the illustrative articles and essays are classic and thought provoking. Although the reading is generally a bit dense for page turning on one's way to bed, that's even viable for individuals looking for a bit of intensity prior to sleep. An excellent, well rounded, exploration into earth's environment and human roles and perceptions regarding it.

F.P.A.: The Life and Times of Franklin Pierce Adams
Published in Hardcover by Olympic Marketing Corporation (September, 1986)
Average review score:

ExcellentThis is an extremely well-written book on a sadly neglected figure in American culture. The most popular newspaper columnist of his time, Adams made "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a national catchphrase and was mentor to George S. Kaufman, James Thurber and other distinguished humorists. I thought the research was particularly thorough--especially regarding the ancestry of Adams' second wife. And someone must have done a lot of work in musty libraries looking up all F.P.A.'s articles for now-forgotten magazines! I hope he got paid well. I would also single out the index for special praise.

Faith in the Barrios: The Pentecostal Poor in Bogota
Published in Hardcover by Lynne Rienner Publishers (April, 1999)
Average review score:

I am the author of this book. I'd like to tell you about it!Pentecostalism is exploding all across Latin America. In just a few decades, the number of evangélico believers has grown from a few hundred to over 50 million. The personal transformation experienced through conversion to this faith is radical and all-encompassing. Such is the change that if the tremendous rate of conversion continues, the "fe evangélica" has the potential to greatly influence the course of all of Latin America in the next century. In a continent where at one time to be a Catholic was to legally exist, one in seven is now evangélico. WHY? Why is the movement so strong? Why does it elicit such zeal and devotion from the believers? Social scientists and scholars of religion have rushed to gather records and statistics, to carry out field work and publish theories that explain the movement's extraordinary success among the lower class of Latin America. By and large, however, the conclusions in these studies are based on the outsider's perspective. Researchers are forced to maintain a certain distance from the evangelicals, due to the believers' constant pressure to convert them and the sub-standard living conditions of Latin America's lower class that discourage "live-in" research. Therefore, a movement based on the passions of a individual's heart and soul has largely been described in macro-structural terms that are removed from the believers' personal devotion in their ongoing struggle to survive. Faith in the Barrios was written from the believers' perspective. In '95 and '96 I lived in a shantytown on the outskirts of Bogotá, Colombia, sharing the struggles of life with the residents of the shantytown. As a believer, I gained immediate and intimate access to the evangélicos' lives and was able to study the movement through the lens of their toilsome existence. Throughout the book, you will find the believers' own words, expressing their faith and its central role in their daily life. Although the book is academic, and not a simple narrative, it is clearly written and carefully organized. Esteemed scholars and high-school students alike will find it to be an unveiled, intimate portrayal of an extraordinary religious movement in a land of passion, violence, beauty, and strife. I encourage you to read it, and welcome your questions and comments! Rebecca Pierce Bomann
